What We Do

At Ranafa Foundation Trust, we empower coastal women and youth with the skills, tools, and market access needed to cultivate seaweed, a fast-growing, high-value marine crop that restores ocean health and captures carbon. In addition to sustainable seaweed farming, our programs actively engage youth in coastal conservation through mangrove planting, beach clean-ups, and the removal of marine plastic waste such as bags and ropes. By combining environmental restoration with economic empowerment, we are nurturing a new generation of climate-smart entrepreneurs committed to protecting our oceans and uplifting their communities.

Areas of Focus

01

Sustainable Seaweed Farming

We equip coastal women with the skills, tools, and access to markets needed to grow seaweed a high value, fast-growing marine crop. Seaweed farming improves ocean health, sequesters carbon, and provides a reliable source of income, enabling women to become climate-smart entrepreneurs.

Mangrove Reforestation

Mangroves are critical blue carbon ecosystems that protect coastlines, nurture marine life, and capture large amounts of carbon. Through community nurseries and participatory planting, we are restoring degraded mangrove forests, improving biodiversity, and increasing natural climate defenses.

03

Community Tree planting

Beyond the coast, we work with local communities to plant indigenous and fruit-bearing trees that restore degraded land, improve soil health, and enhance food and income security. Tree planting is also integrated into school programs to foster environmental stewardship among youth.

Beach Clean-ups

Through organized efforts led by local youth and women, our beach cleanups target the persistent issue of marine plastic pollution, particularly focusing on harmful debris like plastic bags, discarded fishing ropes, and single-use waste. These cleanups not only restore the natural beauty and health of our coastal ecosystems but also instill a strong sense of stewardship and climate awareness among participants. Every cleanup becomes a platform for education, fostering leadership in conservation while reinforcing the connection between clean oceans, sustainable livelihoods, and long-term climate resilience. By integrating beach cleanups into our broader coastal conservation strategy, we are helping to cultivate a culture of accountability and pride in protecting Kenya’s shorelines for future generations.
